What is Experiential Learning?
Experiential Learning is an opportunity for students to expand and exhibit their classroom learned knowledge and skills, in a hands-on working environment.
How does participating benefit my company?
Students enrolled in this program possess knowledge and skill in advanced and current technology and methods. Students are highly motivated and bring fresh ideas and innovations to the field of communications and media.
What are my roles and responsibilities as an employer/mentor?
The role and responsibility of the employer/mentor is to ensure a positive work environment for the student/employee to exhibit and develop their classroom skills in a real working situation, that is mutually beneficial for the employer and student.
What are the costs for potential employers?
There are no costs or fees associated with participating.
What if one day a week is not enough?
One day a week is a minimum requirement. Arrangements can be made that best suit both employer and student but still meet the courses minimum requirements.
How does the employer assess the student?
A year end student assessment survey will be made available on the
Document and Resource page.
What are prerequisite skills the students will have prior to this placement?
Prior to enrollment, students must have completed 84 credits in Communication Studies. Methods and skills gained in this program include; survey, audience, ethnographic, political economic, feminist, content, discourse and textual analyses.

Can the student be hired for a position after the placement is over?
This decision is left to the employer based on the performance of the student. The student also has the option of accepting or rejecting the offer based on their liking of the environment. The course is designed in a way to match students with employers where both groups will have a meaningful and beneficial experience. A prosperous future for both the employer and the student is what Experiential Media at Work aims to accomplish
What is the application process for students to enroll in this course?
Students will apply prior the 2012 Fall semester. A competitive screening process will take place admitting the top students.
Will there be constant contact between the student, employer and professor?
Most definitely. Professor MacLennan will be mediating between the students and employers throughout the duration of the course. If any problem should arise, please inform Professor MacLennan directly for an immediate solution.
How will the student be assigned a placement?
Once enrolled in the course, the student will receive a list of the potential employees with contact information. It is then the student’s responsibility to contact the employers and arrange for an interview. The employer will contact the student subsequent to the interview.
How many students will there be per placement?
There are no limits to the number of students per placement. The number depends on the amount of placements an employment is willing to offer
